I very much like the idea of these class-specific character workbooks. My best friend who DM/GM's teh majority of the time has already created a worksheet for keeping track of additions to our Pathfinder characters boost skill points, etc.

I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to see one of your books for the Magus, though. That is my newest love as far as a class to play goes. I almost always played a Druid before.

Thanks and Live Long & Prosper

Excellent way to spin the situation. I'd say if the player hadn't been frustrated it would probably be easier to ignore them. Some people just like to overcome class boundaries by going beyond normal capabilities. I'd say if you ran into a player like that in the future it might be better to just offer to help them make a skilled fighter, or swashbuckling rogue.

Overall though neither of those suggestions probably would have helped with that specific player from the sounds of them.

Excellent! Great story, and great conclusion. That's the kind of negatives-into-positives that really help to keep an RPG group together over time. :) Congratulations!

Your story sounds familiar. I got my first boxed set in a magic shop that also carried games. As if being a high school aged magician in the midwest was not geeky enough now I became a player of "that Satanic Game" The 4 kids who played were all the top of our class, and our first game included Elric the Half Elven, Elbereth Gilthoniel, a cleric, and Zandor the wizard. In college we almost got expelled for playing because the dean had read some of the "Devil worshiping" game stuff.
Gaming has been my release valve, my creative outlet, and my main addiction since 1979. I run a once a week game for a bunch of 40-50 year old guys, a 2x a month game for some other adult friends, ad three rotating games for my teenaged kids and their geeky friends. I'd rather see them gathered round the table arguing spells than out cruising the streets!

Hi there! A lot of parallels with my life. I personally view roleplaying as a creative outlet, as well, and I also met my wife playing Dungeons & Dragons. This was a great article; thank you for sharing your experiences!

Be diverse up front. Let people know that you are more than a one-trick pony. If you're an actor and get known for a specific role, be taking other roles, even if they're small, supporting ones to let people ee your range. If you're a "topic blogger", set up a blog for the topic as well as a personal blog so other people can see a more rounded picture of you.

And always have an exit strategy, so if you need to leave the public eye you can do so gracefully.
